How do I know if my baby is getting enough to eat?
Signs your baby is getting enough to eat
Many mothers worry whether they can make enough milk for their baby.
These signs can help you to know that your baby is getting enough:
- Your baby is breastfeeding often, 8-12 times per day (24 hours).
- You can see and hear your baby swallowing while breastfeeding.
- Your baby seems content after a feeding.
- Your baby is steadily gaining weight.
It is normal for breastfed babies to lose some weight in the first week following birth. However, they should be back to their birth weight by day 10 to 14 of life.
- Your baby has enough pees and poops throughout the day.
Baby poop can vary in color.
In the first week, baby poop changes from black or dark green to a yellow color.
- After the first week, poop from babies who have received only breast milk will be yellow and can look seedy.
- After the first week up to about 6 weeks, your baby might have 6 or more poops a day (24 hours).
- After about 6 weeks, your baby may have fewer poops each day.
